The Residency Training Office is located in the VA Medical Center in La Jolla.
It consists of a director, a part-time associate director, a program administrator, and an administrative staff person.
Zisook
SIDNEY ZISOOK, M.D., PROFESSOR , RESIDENCY TRAINING DIRECTOR
Dr. Zisook went to medical school at Stritch-Loyola. He did his residency in psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital and has spent the better part of the last three decades in medical student and residency education. His research career has been focused on grief and bereavement as well as on clinical aspects of mood disorders, but his real passion in academia is training young clinicians and investigators to be the best they can be. Among his many awards and recognitions are two research awards for bereavement related studies, Best Doctor in America Award, Best Psychiatrist in San Diego and teaching awards from the APA, the San Diego Psychiatric Society and the UCSD School of Medicine. He has been the Residency Training Director at UCSD since 1995, after having been Associate Training Director for 12 years before that.

IAN EVERALL, M.D., DIRECTOR, PSYCHIATRY RESEARCH TRACK
Dr. Everall serves as the Director of the UCSD Outpatient Psychiatry Services, Site Director for the Residency Training Program and is the Director of the Research Track.. His primary research focus is to investigate the cellular and molecular neuropathology of disorders relevant to psychiatry. Within the field of HIV and neuroscience Dr Everall identified that HIV infection of the brain resulted in neuronal death and with colleagues at the HIV Neurobehavioral Research Center, UCSD, he correlated the pathological changes with neurocognitive impairment. More recently he has been investigating avenues for neuroprotection and assessing how well various antiretroviral agents suppress viral replication in the human brain.

Sewell
DANIEL SEWELL, M.D., DIRECTOR, GERIATRIC PSYCHIATRY
Dr. Sewell attended medical school at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, IA. He completed the first two years of his psychiatry residency at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, NM. When he completed his psychiatry residency at the University of California, San Diego he was awarded the Chairman’s prize for research excellence during the psychiatry residency. Following residency, he completed a fellowship in geriatric psychiatry at UCSD. Dr. Sewell heads our innovative Seniors Mental Health Treatment Program and is Director of the Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship.

ANDRES SCIOLLA, M.D., ASSOCIATE TRAINING DIRECTOR
Dr Sciolla is an IMG from Chile who completed psychiatry residencies both in Chile and at UCSD. He has participated in clinical research in HIV disease, late life psychosis, psychopharmacology of anxiety and mood disorders, chronobiology and light treatment. He is interested in medical education and his expertise includes patient-physician communication and psychotherapy training. His current research endeavors focus on health care behaviors among adult survivors of childhood trauma diagnosed with lifestyle-associated chronic medical illnesses. Dr. Sciolla chairs the Competency Committee and has played a key role in the development of our 4-year coordinated psychotherapy curriculum.

SANJAI RAO, M.D., SITE DIRECTOR, VAMC
Dr. Rao is a graduate of the University California San Diego Medical School. Dr. Rao continued his residency training at UCSD in Psychiatry were he served as chief resident. Dr. Rao continues the teaching tradition as our site director at the VAMC.

KRISTIN CADENHEAD, M.D., CURRICULUM DIRECTOR NEUROSCIENCE
Dr. Cadenhead went to medical school at University of Texas Medical - Galveston and completed her psychiatry residency at UCSD. Dr. Cadenhead is the Director of the Psychiatry Primary Care Clinic at the San Diego Veterans Administrative Medical Center. Her areas of research focus on prodromal and subsyndromal schizophrenia. She has been Associate Training Director in charge of the Senior class since 2001 and plays a proactive role in the independent study and research training program.

JONATHAN MEYER, M.D., CURRICULUM DIRECTOR NEUROSCIENCE
Dr. Meyer develops and leads the curriculum training for reisdents in Neuroscience. He is also the faculty mentor and advisor on research and leads the Independent Study Project program.
  Tracy Riley
TRACY RILEY, B.S., C-TAGME, PROGRAM ADMINISTRATOR
Ms. Riley joined the UCSD Department of Psychiatry as the Residency Training Coordinator in 1999 and holds a Bachelors of Science Degree in Business Administration and is a certified member of the Training Administrators of Graduate Medical Education. Her experience with residency training began in 1994 as Coordinator for the UCSD Child Psychiatry Residency Program located at Children’s Hospital San Diego. Ms. Riley has served as a member of the Administrators Steering Committee and Information Committee for the American Association of Directors of Residency Training. She also served as a member of the Psychiatry Certification Task force for The American Graduate Medical Education Certification Board.
