The Department of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) is respected nationally and internationally as a superb department known for its innovation, productivity and excellence of its training, research and clinical programs. Our guiding principle is that our programs must be at the cutting edge of our field integrating the full spectrum of empirically proven techniques and methods for the understanding, diagnosis and treatment of patients with mental disorders. The department has a deep commitment as well as to understanding the individual’s psychiatric disorders based on the premise that they are brain disorders that are dynamically influenced and shaped by the patient’s social and cultural life and past experiences and family histories. We are dedicated to training future leaders in the field of psychiatry and our unique collegial and warm ambience together with the plethora of excellent training and scientific opportunities make us an ideal place for candidates who are considering or are already committed to academic and scientific careers in psychiatry. By design, a rich diversity of modern scientific and clinical strategies are readily available within the department, but the core organizing ethic of our educational and training programs is a profound commitment to our patients’ well being. It is our conviction that the core learning experience of clinical psychiatry is primarily focused upon meaningful interactions with a rich array of patients with mental disorders. The Residency Training Program is developmental in nature, appropriately challenging the residents at each level as they move from intensively supervised beginners to autonomous, confident, skilled and experienced clinicians and colleagues at graduation. The training occurs within the department’s environment of collegiality, enthusiasm, openness of communication, intellectual and scientific rigor, and spirit of inquiry, which characterize our highly productive and energetic faculty. The UCSD faculty represents a virtual who’s who of world-class, basic, translational and clinical scientists and experienced superb psychiatric clinicians, all of who are available to participate in our residents training experiences. The department carries on the UCSD tradition of scientific and academic excellence and expects it from its faculty, trainees, and students. The goal of the residency program is to develop highly competent psychiatric physicians and leaders who are comprehensively trained in the most up-to-date diagnostic and treatment techniques that have proven effective for mental disorders. We have as well a very strong track record of training and launching the successful academic careers of interested residents. In closing, I truly and warmly welcome and encourage your interest in our department. |
